Organization of the Month: Dunn Company

Combining Business with Philanthropy and Community-mindedness

“There seems to be a lot more neighborhood spirit in recent years,” states David Tyrolt, President of Dunn Company.

“Between The Good Samaritan Inn, Old Kings Orchard Community Center, and the Neighborhood Organizations such as CONO, it seems like people have stacked hands and committed to taking care of the neighborhood - our neighborhood - and our own people,” claims Tyrolt.

Dunn Company is a locally-owned, pavement construction company with more than 75th anniversary years of history in the Decatur area. David Tyrolt is a Decatur native and is fully invested in the future of the community.

As a Good Samaritan Inn neighbor and collaborator, the Dunn Company has truly supported the local neighborhood under David Tyrolt’s leadership. Most recently, Dunn Company took the initiative to donate repainting The Good Samaritan Inn parking lot lines, which contributes to the safety of patrons and the aesthetic of the neighborhood.

“Dunn Company has been very involved in the neighborhood revitalization process,” claims The Good Samaritan Inn Executive Director, Rev. Stacey Brohard.

“David has been to practically every meeting of the community revitalization meetings, Rev. Brohard explains. "In addition to the physical footprint the company has in the neighborhood, Dunn Company has personally taken home a lot of the abandoned homes and property in the Old Kings Orchard Neighborhood.”

Dunn Company has grown incrementally in the last 5-10 years. As real estate adjacent to the company has become available, they've been able to spread their wings and acquire uninhabited Decatur property.

Tyrolt sees that, through the acquiring and clearing of lots in the neighborhood, Dunn Company has provided addition by subtraction. By acquiring neighborhood land and clearing dilapidated buildings, The Dunn Company is contributing to the aesthetic, safety and revitalization of the community.

The Good Samaritan Inn is located in and serves the community Dunn Company is located in. So, when the Dunn Company improves the neighborhood, we benefit.

“When I look at the environment on the west side of Monroe and North side of Green Street from a couple of years ago, the area was pretty bleak with dilapidated and abandoned homes,” explains Tyrolt. “We thought that, from a safety standpoint, from an aesthetic standpoint it would make sense to acquire those and clear the lots.”

Vacant, green spaces provides opportunity for future neighborhood growth and renewal.

“Having green space is better than what was there before. If that creates an opportunity for someone to do something constructive with them, we’d love to see that.” - David Tyrolt, President and CEO of Dunn Company.

Reverend Stacey Brohard also sees the benefit to the neighborhood and community of having Dunn Company acquire what was formerly unkept properties in the neighborhood near The Good Samaritan Inn.

“Dunn Company acquired many properties in the area, cleaned up the properties, is maintaining the vacant lots, and making them available to future growth,” states Brohard.  "And, if there’s a higher purpose for Dunn Company's lots once they’re cleared, this will only continue to benefit the Old Kings Orchard neighborhood."

At The Good Samaritan Inn, we are so fortunate to partner with local businesses like Dunn Company. Businesses that care about innovation, development and the community where they reside.
